April 18, 1776

Georgia was not represented in the First Continental Congress in Philadelphia in 1774, and for a time, Lyman Hall was the only representative from Georgia in the Congress. This notice from Savannah announces the election of four delegates: Archibald Bulloch, John Houstoun, and Lyman Hall, who had already been in the Congress for some months,as well as Button Gwinnett and George Walton. Ultimately, only three of these men—Hall, Gwinnett, and Walton—signed the Declaration of Independence on behalf of Georgia. Archibald Bulloch stayed in Georgia and became governor in April 1776. John Houstoun did not come to Philadelphia.
