Philadelphia and Arkhangelsk are nearly 4500 miles apart, but in October 1776, the Russian port was in the Philadelphia newspapers. News from London, dated July 24, said that a “new plan” was in place for extending British trade with Russia “in consequence of the defect in our Colonies.” This trade was to be conducted primarily through the “port of Archangel,” the longtime chief seaport of Russia before the establishment of Saint Petersburg in 1703.
