On May 1, there was an election for new assemblymen to represent Philadelphia County. The vote counts were reported in Philadelphia newspapers, including the German Staatsbote. The four men who received the most votes and earned the new seats were Samuel Howell, Andrew Allen, George Clymer, and Alexander Wilcox. Each of these candidates received more than 920 votes. Thomas Willing received 911 votes, Frederick Kuhl received 904, Owen Biddle received 903, and Daniel Roberdeau received 890. The candidates who were publicly known to support independence were Clymer, Kuhl, Biddle, and Roberdeau, and only Clymer gained enough votes to earn a seat. In July, after significant political changes and a call for a new constitution for Pennsylvania, Clymer, Kuhl, Biddle, and Roberdeau were all elected to the constitutional convention.
