This extract was taken from a letter from a man in St. Mary’s County, along the Chesapeake Bay in southern Maryland, to his friend in Baltimore. The main claimed that Lord Dunmore, the royal governor of Virginia, had enlisted the crew of an oyster boat—“austerboot” in the German translation in the Staatsbote—to spy for him. The oysters on board the boat concealed five British muskets for the men to use for their defense. The letter writer reported that the men had been taken into custody. He advised his friend in Baltimore to be on guard, and to carefully examine any suspicious people or vessels. In fact, he wrote that, it had come to light that this particular boat had been bound for Baltimore with the intention of gathering information about the city and its fortifications.

Auszug eines schreibens von einem Herrn in St. Marys Graffschaft, an seinen freund in dieser stadt, datirt den 14ten März, 1776.

Wir haben eben ein austerboot, mit sechs mann an bord, genommen, und auf untersuchen, fünf Brittische musketen, welche im boot verbogen waren, gefunden; die leute wurden genau verhört, und es erhellet, daß sie von Virginien gekommen, und nach Baltimore bestimmet waren: Sir hatten austern an bord, ihr vorhaben zu verheelen und zu befördern, indem sie von jenem schandvollen mietlinge der Regierung, dem Lord Dunmore, als auspäher angestellet waren nachricht und erforschungen von dem zustant eurer stadt zu sammlen und eure vestungswerke zu besichtigen, &c.—Sie sind alle in gehöriger verhaft.—Man hoffet, ihr werdet auf guter hut seyn, und alle verbächtige personen und fahrzeuge sorgfältig untersuchen."
