June 14, 1776

By June 1776, royal governors were not particularly welcome in the colonies anymore. “Guvernör Eden”—Robert Eden, the governor of Maryland—left the colony at the formal request of the Maryland Convention. This report in the German newspaper in Philadelphia notes that the convention wanted him to be able to leave in peace. Eden and his family ultimately departed on a British ship, the Fowey, in late June. After he returned to England, King George III made Eden the Baron of Maryland. After the war ended, Eden was able to return to Maryland, where he died. The governor who was forced out by the convention that met in Annapolis in 1776 was then buried in Annapolis in 1784.
