July 5, 1776
The German newspaper in Philadelphia broke the news that the Declaration of Independence was being printed. On July 5, Henry Miller printed the news from July 2, that the Congress had voted to declare independence from Great Britain. But he added another piece of information: “Die Declaration in Englisch ist jetzt in der Presse,” or the Declaration in English is now in the press. He was referring to John Dunlap’s printing press, and perhaps Benjamin Towne’s press as well, as the Declaration would appear in Towne’s Pennsylvania Evening Post the next day. According to the Staatsbote, the Declaration was dated “den 4ten July, 1776,” and would appear in print within the next day or two.
