January 5, 1776

Readers of the Pennsylvanischer Staatsbote, Philadelphia’s German-language newspaper in 1776, would have been pleased to hear about the establishment of “Eine Neue Buchdruckeren,” or a new printing office in the city. Melchior Steiner and Charles Cist announced that they had “neuen und saubern Schriften”—new and clean typefaces—and all of the other equipment needed for a successful printing business. They published this advertisement in both the German and English newspapers in Philadelphia and offered to take on work in those and other languages. Steiner and Cist offered assurances to the public in general (and their friends and acquaintances in particular) that they would give their all to this undertaking and execute their printing work with diligence and care.

Steiner and Cist’s printing office was initially located at the corner of Coats Alley and Second Street, just above Race Street. But within a few months, they moved south on Second Street to Ludwick Sprogell’s house. In both their initial advertisement and the notice of relocation, Steiner and Cist provided as much direction as possible so that potential customers could locate their business among all of the other printing offices and booksellers that occupied the same few blocks near the Delaware riverfront.

Eine Neue Buchdruckeren

Die Endsbenamten bitten um Erlaubniß, das geehrte Publicum zu benachrichtigen, Daß da sie nunmehr mit neuen und saubern Schriften und der übrigen zur Treibung der Buchdruckerkunst erforderlichen Geräthschaft versehen sind, sie einige ihnen aufgetragene Arbeit in der Deutschen, Englischen und andern Sprachen dankbarlich annehmen, und mit Treue, Fleiß und Sorgfalt aufs schleunigste verfertigen wollen: Sie haben sichs zur unverbrüchlichen Vorschrift gemacht, ihre äussersten Kräfte anzuwenden, um sich die Zufriedenheit ihrer Kundleute zu erwerben, und hoffen daber das Publicum überhaupt, und ihre Freunde und Bekannten insbesondere, werden dieses zum gemeinen Besten abzielende Unternehmen mit ihrer geneigten Ermunterung begünstigen.
