Throughout 1776, rumors swirled that the king of Portugal, José I, was near death. This notice, printed in Lisbon in mid-March and in Philadelphia in August, indicated that the king’s health was “still in the same situation.” José I’s demise was linked with the possibility of war with Spain. Adding to the intrigue was the fact that the queen, Mariana Victoria, was the sister of the king of Spain, Carlos III. Ultimately, José I survived until February 1777.
