Dr. Bodo Otto placed this advertisement in the Staatsbote to showcase his skills and supplies as a trained physician. He thanked his friends and the general public—in the town of Reading, where he lived, as well as the surrounding countryside—for the confidence they placed in him. Additionally, he gave notice that the apothecary shop where he resided was well-stocked with medicines and other supplies, and asked for the public’s patronage.

Otto had trained as a surgeon at the University of Göttingen before emigrating to British North America. He brought his medical skills to the Continental Army where he treated sick and wounded soldiers, beginning with soldiers who needed treatment for smallpox.

Stattet hiemit allen seinen Freunden und dem sämtlichen Publico seinen schuldigen Dank ab für die gute Zuneigung und das Vertrauen so sie sowol in der Stadt Reading als im Lande herum zu ihm als einem Urzt gehabt haben; und ersuchet hiedurch am das fernere Fortdauren ihrer Gewogenheit. Und weil die Apothek, wo er wohnet, jetzt in einem guten Stande, auch mit guter Arzney und andern Materialien wohl versehen ist; so ersucht er auch hiedurch ihn mit ihrer Kundschaft ferner zu begünstigen; ein jeder kan versichert seyn daß er mit der größten Aufrichtigkeit soll behandelt werden.
